Mammals of the world or I should say mammals of the tropics. One day in the field makes me wonder and dream. Two peccaries and a monkey came with me today to find those experiments of mine in this tapir land.

A window to the forest, to those areas where large mammals live. To a magical world where tapirs survive. Where tapirs, our extant pleistocene survivors as they are called, share their knowledge of the forest with us. A window to my research on this enigmatic species, its movements, its behaviour and most important a window to the understanding of why these animals inhabit the earth and to understand their role in the ecosystem.

Large mammals: magical creatures of the earth
Large mammals are probably the most interesting animals in the earth. Their movements and behaviour are complicated to explain. I have been intrigued by how large mammals such as elephants or tapirs have been able to survive in this human dominated and changing environment.
Great beasts living in fragmented ecosystems. Big animals that hide in the most profound areas of the forest, and are indeed magical creatures that appear and disappear from your sight in a couple of seconds. I am amazed by how these animals move in the forest, with their big bodies, how they manage to be silent and to walk without any noise.
A herd of elephants slowly walking toward the water, with their always smooth and strong steps, silent and noisy. A tapir eating big chunks of stems and leaves with a strong decision to fulfill his appetite in a couple of minutes. Observations like these make me like and be captivated by large mammals.
I'm wondering if there is evidence for these tapirs in seed dispersal and if so, of which species...I saw you had a paper indicating they were of use in the dispersal of Manilkara zapota...and wondering if there are any other known species for which this tapir is important? Thanks
